I’m Victoria Basnuevo, a freelance editor with over seven years of experience working with fiction authors across genres.
As both an editor and a writer with a foundation in creative writing, I take a collaborative, detail-focused approach to editing that strengthens the clarity, structure, and flow of your story, paying close attention to the finer details that support a smooth reading experience.
“You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you, and we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.”
—Arthur Plotnik
I love breaking down a story into its individual elements. When I edit, I ask questions not only to better understand the world, but to encourage authors to think more deeply about aspects of their story, such as character motivation, worldbuilding, or structure. My education and experience have focused on craft and analysis, but I never overlook grammar. I have a strong attention to detail and a knack for putting stubborn commas in their place.
I approach editing with the goal of helping authors learn and grow, so my feedback often includes clear explanations and examples to support revision decisions. I’m always happy to answer questions and genuinely enjoy brainstorming ideas as manuscripts develop.
I specialize in fantasy and romance across multiple subgenres and especially enjoy working with romantasy stories. I also have experience with middle grade, young adult, new adult, dystopian, and paranormal fiction.
Education:

Developmental Editing analyzes the foundation of a book and strives to ensure every beat has the right impact, that every conflict increases the stakes. Here, we’ll grab the reader with strong world-building, unforgettable characters, and a plot that makes them turn the page.
During this editing stage, my feedback will address character motivation and development, plot flow, world-building, and character voice. I also review sentence structure and grammar, both in line and in comments, as a bonus.

Line/Copy Editing focuses on how the story is told to improve reader immersion. Here, I tighten the prose by removing repetitive language and information, smooth the sharp transitions, and strengthen areas that could show instead of tell. I watch for head-hopping narrators and teleporting characters, all while making sure commas are where they’re supposed to be.

Proofreading is the final stage of the editing process, where punctuation, typos, and misspellings are caught and the story is polished before it’s off to formatting and publishing.

The Manuscript Critique is a good option for authors who aren’t sure what their story needs, especially when deciding between Developmental and Line Editing. I read your manuscript and take detailed notes on plot, world-building, and character development. I also pay attention to grammar patterns and sentence structure, as well as frequently appearing issues, such as dangling modifiers and repetition.
This service does not include any work within the document. You will receive a detailed editorial letter with my findings.
